Overview

This page contains information related to planing a POSSE

0. Workshop Preparation

  • Set up:
    • Listservs
    • IRC meetbots
    • Etherpads
    • Wiki
    • What else?
    • Git repo?

1. Stage 1 Activities

These activities are intended to prepare a faculty member to get the most out of a face-to-face workshop. One main emphasis is on communication tools as these support entrance to the communities. The goal is to get faculty familiar with the tools so that they can use them efficiently during the actual workshop. A second emphasis is for faculty members to think about ways to include HFOSS activities in the classroom. This will help faculty get a start on determining the best ways to incorporate HFOSS into the curriculum.

Guidelines for the activities:

  • Activities completed according to schedule within the six weeks prior to the workshop.
  • Each activity takes 30-90 minutes requiring 12-15 hours of work in the four weeks prior to the semester.
  • Most activities will involve reporting results on a wiki.
  • IRC meetings will be used to periodically talk about the results of activities.
  • The activities are broken down into two-week segments. All activities must be completed within a day or two of the end of the deadline.
  • More "pre-work" ideas from POSSE may be found here: http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_curriculum
  • Look at http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_curriculum#Monday to when creating the activities below as learning objectives and good ideas reside here.

2. Stage 2 Activities

This is a 2+-day workshop where participants arrive for an evening meal and intro session on day 1, work all of day 2, work all of day 3 and end at 5:00 on day 3.

  • Have all participants on a common IRC channel and perhaps also one from HFOSS groups
    • Ideal to have mentors from HFOSS groups available during days 2 and 3

3. Stage 3 Activities

Under Contsruction!

An initial list:

  • Join a small learning group.
  • Plan for incorporating FOSS into course?
  1. Join an HFOSS project
    • Need to have a list of projects and mentors
  2. Join corresponding small group
    •  ??
