Definitions: Food bank - warehouse that stores the food Food pantry - distributes food to clients within the community A Food Policy Council (FPC) consists of a group of representatives and stakeholders from many sectors of the food system. Ideally, the councils include participants representing all five sectors of the food system (production, consumption, processing, distribution and waste recycling)

Amy Carleton College Interested in 2 aspects of the problem:

  • Food recovery: distribute unused food from the dining halls to 2 local food organizations. There are surely logistics issues here.
  • Food sustainability: making sure Carleton is making sustainable food purchasing choices (somehow this relates to the first point, I believe)

There are also some initiatives around food recovery from local farms ("gleaning"). It would be interesting to connect that with the other food recovery initiative. I have a meeting set up with one of our "food fellows" in our Civic Engagement office this spring to talk about potential collaborations.

Monisha (The College of New Jersey)

Book: The Good Food Revolution, by Will Allen. Describes his project, Growing Power, and honors and celebrates what others have done to promote healthy communities through urban gardens that grow affordable and sustainable “good food.” Summer 2016 reading, around TCNJ’s intellectual theme, “Toward Just and Sustainable Communities”.

Local Organization - Mercer Street Friends in Trenton - a focus area is their Food Bank Local Organization - Isles, Inc - a focus area is community gardens / urban farming - another focus area is mapping locations of healthy food outlets, for access in food deserts
