Stage 1 Activities

Below is the schedule for the pre-workshop activities. Participants should finish all activities in a timely fashion in order to be reimbursed for travel expenses to the face-to-face portion of the workshop. Please send all comments to Heidi Ellis (ellis@wne.edu).

Part A: Due October 15th

Approximately 5-5.5 hours

The activities in these first two weeks will start to introduce you to the world of FOSS projects, the community of faculty interested in student participation in FOSS projects, and a few of the basic communication tools commonly used in FOSS projects.

  1. Introduction to FOSS – 60 minutes
  2. Join TOS - 30 minutes
    • Participants sign up for TOS list and enter themselves in the "People" area
  3. Introduction to Wikis - 30-45 minutes
    • Provides an overview of wikis and short exercise in which participants create their own page and post an introduction
  4. Introduction to IRC - 60-75 minutes
    • Provides an overview of IRC including features and function and an introduction to the role of IRC in FOSS projects
  5. IRC Meeting - 60 minutes
    • Introductions
    • Discussion of HFOSS projects
  6. Anatomy of a FOSS Project - 60 minutes
    • A walk through of the major tools and interactions found in a FOSS project.

Part B: Due October 29th

Approximately 5-5.5 hours

  1. FOSS Field Trip - 60 minutes
  2. Project Evaluation Activity - 60-90 minutes - Post results to wiki
    • Pared down evaluation of HFOSS project based on the evaluation metric.
  3. Blogging Activity - 60 minutes
    • Create a blog on wordpress, post a blog entry about the FOSS Field Trip activity, add your blog to the wiki
  4. FOSS in Courses Planning 1 - 60 minutes, post your selected activity to your wiki page.
  5. IRC Meeting - 60 minutes - Wednesday, May 7, 11:00am EST

Part C: Due November 12th

Approximately 4 hours

  1. IRC Meeting - 60 minutes - the week of November 3rd (day/time to be determined)
    • Discuss progress
    • Discuss results of B.1 and B.2
    • Guidance for selecting a project
  2. Bug-Tracker Activity - 60 minutes
  3. Source Code Management/Control Activity - 60 minutes
  4. FOSS in Courses Planning 2 - 60-90 minutes, post your selected activity to your wiki page.
